Dry Skin

Xerosis is the scientific name for dry skin. Sometimes also described as dehydrated skin. It is a common skin condition of variable severity, typically characterized by rough, scaly, and often itchy skin.

• The uppermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum becomes disrupted as a consequence of losing moisture and this leads to the roughness characterising the condition.

• This can also be a feature of some clinical disorders (eg. atopic dermatitis), although dry and rough skin is a common condition for many people, without the presence of a clinical skin disorder.

• Dry or dehydrated skin is more vulnerable to external aggressions as the barrier function becomes weakened with loss of moisture – and this can lead to different problems, including increased sensitivity as the skin becomes more vulnerable to irritation by allergens or invasion by bacteria or fungi.

• The formation and the appearance of wrinkling is exacerbated by dryness of the skin.

• The lack of moisture in the uppermost layer of the epidermis also impairs the maturation of the keratin-forming skin cells [keratinocytes]

Skincare Routine For Care of Dry Skin

The skincare routine aims to rehydrate the skin, to allow it to regain its smoothness.  The balance of oils in the epidermis must be restored to allow the keratin (skin protein) forming cells to mature.
